Manatee Protection Program in Effect
With the arrival of warm weather, the manatees have moved back into the
northern stretches of the St. Johns River and are at risk from injury or
death from vessel operations. The JMTX cooperative agreement "JMTX
Manatee Protection Program" among commercial port stakeholders is
currently in effect.
Dredge TEXAS moves Uptown Posted June 15: The remainder of the maintenance dredge in Mayport has been cancelled due to a piping failure from the discharge cell at Buck Island. This cancellation has allowed for the TEXAS to move ahead with its project schedule. GLDD plans to move the dredge TEXAS to the Terminal Channel area to complete the 40 ft channel depth project by the end of business today June 15, 2010. It is conceivable that the TEXAS could begin work in Terminal Channel as early as tomorrow. In that event, the TEXAS plans to initially set up 160 ft inside the green toe at the intersection of Long Branch Range and Terminal Channel. This will allow the TEXAS to swing to both sides of the channel without breaking it's pipeline for vessel traffic. We will revert to the notification process used last fall. The TEXAS will require a minimum of 45 minutes to move the dredge to accommodate any vessel traffic. Vessel Operators and Agents are requested to call the dredge TEXAS when they call for Pilots for departure. This two hour notice was very effective and efficient and resulted in zero or minimum delays. On another note, the hopper dredge LIBERTY ISLAND has about completed her work in the Terminal Channel area. She was successful in removing all or most of the material above the rock. In fact in some areas, she was able to get down to 40 ft. In the cable area near the junction of Terminal Channel and Long Branch Range, she was able to get down to 40 ft; on the green side she reached 41.5 ft. The dredge TEXAS will now come in and bring the entire area down to 40 ft plus 2 ft overdraft. The LIBERTY ISLAND has tentative plans to proceed to the Gulf by the end of the week to assist in building dikes to protect the shorelines of the Gulf coast states.
The Texas monitors VHF channels 16, 13, and works channel 01. Capt Mike Getchell Shoaling results in Draft Restrictions The following was released by Captain Jay Winegeart on February 11, 2010:
Dear Customer,
Due to shoaling indicated by survey in the Terminal Channel area, the St. Johns Bar Pilot Association has placed restrictions on vessels transiting up river of Jacksonville Port Authority Talleyrand Berth 7.
Vessels inbound to or outbound from up river of Jacksonville Port Authority Berth 7 (6 through 3) will be limited to a maximum draft of 36 feet fresh water. In addition, vessels 34 feet or over, fresh water, will transit the area at or near high water.”
These restrictions are put in place in an attempt to ensure adequate water depth.
As soon as the shoaling is addressed we will revert to normal operations.
Sincerely,
Jay Winegeart
Captain James P. Winegeart, President St. Johns Bar Pilot Association
